How to WIN with Digital Media

What is a digital media strategy

A digital media strategy is similar to a digital marketing strategy. The difference is it is the practice of marketing your products or services to customers through online, and digital mediums.

These mediums include but are not limited to:

  • Web pages
  • Video
  • Audio
  • Apps
  • Emails
  • Ebooks
  • Sales pages

A good digital media strategy solves problems for you customers. When planned correctly it gives you an overview on what to concentrate on and what leave out.

Why does your business need a digital media strategy?

Approximately 80% of people research products or services online, before they make a decision to buy.

A digital media strategy when done well can deliver better customer experiences to create brand awareness, customer enjoyment and build strong brand loyalty. Digital media strategies help you focus on creating value for your customers, while giving you a competitive edge in the market

4 Digital Media Mistakes to Avoid

Below are common digital media mistakes that many small businesses make when creating their strategy.

1. Goal setting

Many small businesses have the false belief that they need to be on all social media channels to reach their target audience. They often run their business through traditional marketing efforts, without understanding how digital marketing works.

The most effective digital media strategy is to define your goals first, and then choose the specific social media and digital marketing tactics that can help you achieve them.

2. Know your Target Audience

A common and costly mistake is assuming who will be interested in your product or services. There is no exclusive for not researching who your target audience is and their interests through social media and analytics.

Your overall marketing performance is based on knowing and engaging with your target audience, providing content that will be seen by the right people at the right time, to ensure they want to buy your products and services.

3. Time to Produce Results

Sometimes business owners assume that because digital technology evolves so quickly that digital media marketing is meant to deliver results immediately. When they don’t see immediate results, they often pull out.

The digital world moves pretty fast, but your audience(s) are human, and people take time to become engaged. Let’s not forget the constant changes to algorithms, your audiences might not even see your content when you first post it.

It often takes multiple points of exposure before a potential customer engages with relevant content or your social media ads.

4. Not Understanding Your Data

There’s so much data available that you can easily fall down a rabbit hole of looking at numbers and stats. Are you looking at the right data? If you are, do you know what to do with it?

The first step is to figure out which data is relevant. Outline your goals and KPIs to see what’s working and what isn’t.

Measuring data varies for each business. I believe that every business can benefit from using Google Analytics because it gives you detailed information about your website traffic.

Of course, the most perfect, refined data in the world won’t help if you don’t have an agile digital media strategy in place.
